Chiaroscuro Still Life Painting.
Registration is now closed for this workshop. Check back for next month’s paint-along.
The Chiaroscuro style of painting has existed since the Renaissance period and is defined as the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, creating bold contrasts that affect the entire composition. It is an Italian term which literally means ‘light-dark’. Whatever is lit in the painting becomes the focal point and is emphasized by the surrounding darkness. The use of such strong contrasts of light achieves a sense of depth and volume in three-dimensional objects. This unique technique of lighting within a painting creates rich and moody vignettes. Artists who are known for the use of chiaroscuro include Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio.
In Tracy Wilson’s Paint-Along Demo she will be painting a fall themed still life employing the chiaroscuro style. With the use of soft pastel, Tracy will reveal how to emphasize high contracts of lights and darks resulting in high drama, luminosity, and mystery. She is enthralled with the way that shapes come forward to catch the light, and how the lights and darks support and play upon each other to move the eye around the composition.
Tracy Wilson is a Colorado artist who creates primarily in soft pastel. Though she is best known for her dramatic still life paintings, Tracy also enjoys landscape and figurative paintings. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado where she served on the Board of Directors for eight years. Her paintings have been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally.
