BIOGRAPHY
February 2025
More than 45 years ago, Ginger Whellock moved from the Chicago suburbs to Montana where she lived and worked on a remote cattle ranch. She immediately fell in love with the western culture of self-reliance and the expansive beauty of the landscape. Since 1981 she has lived in Colorado.
Ginger’s art career began when, at 9 years old, she received her first set of oil paints. She has pursued watercolor, pen and ink, and graphite while on the ranch and supplied a gallery in Kalispell, Montana with her work. After moving to Colorado, she worked in watercolor, pastel, and then returned to oil paint as her medium of choice.
In 1999 Ginger began selling her paintings through well-known galleries in Santa Fe, Taos, Bozeman, Denver, and Boulder. She has been invited or juried into many major national shows across the US including Oil Painters of America, Women Artists of the West, American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, National oil and acrylic Painters Society, Plein Air Artists Colorado, Mountain Oyster Club, Colorado Governor’s Show, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Western Masters and many others. She has won a significant number of awards in both pastel and oil. Ginger has earned Master Signature Membership in Women Artists of the West (2013), Signature memberships in Plein Air Artists Colorado (2017), Pastel Society of Colorado (2007) and PaintAmerica Society (2009).
In her words: “We see because of light. The light, dark and mid values reveal a collection of shapes that form a simple abstract composition. If you add fine drawing skills the result brings detail and reality to those shapes. Applying impressionistic color and brush strokes keeps the effort from being static and photographic. I then complete the process by adding personal emotion through color, temperature and value and manipulating the composition around the focal area. These simple factors are my objectives in painting, a style I refer to as ‘casual realism’.”
Ginger loves to teach classical oil painting methods, ensuring her students are well versed and accomplished in drawing, composition, color theory, values and perspective. She also hosts a group of aspiring artists twice a month in her teaching studio as they develop along their individual artistic directions. Sharing her knowledge, watching others grow into artists and painting for other’s enjoyment give her extreme pleasure.
Mary Williams Fine Arts of Boulder and Framed Image of Denver currently represent Ginger’s work. You will also find her work in many important virtual and gallery shows across the US, on her website, Instagram, and Facebook.
