Ellen Laverdure

I work in pastel and in watercolor, sometimes combining the two, in images that convey a sense of the land in Colorado.

In watercolor I express the fluidity of a land in flux, as it is changed and shaped by people. My pastel work expresses the vibrancy of what surrounds me - grasses, mountains, fields and rivers.

I paint landscapes because they offer me a sense of my own place in the world. I paint what I see, real places that I have visited, or the memory of a place that has touched me. When I paint, the result is a mix of the emotional and visual memory, snapshots of a time and place that have affected my sense of what it is to be alive in the natural world.

My goal is to have my paintings create a sense of place that is familiar feeling, and yet a uniquely personal look at the world.
